Up for sale, here’s a rare unique and transitional Gibson Custom Shop Pre-Historic 1960 RI Les Paul Standard with a ridiculous monster Quilted Maple top in a beautiful Heritage Cherry Sunburst. All Original, made in USA in June 1992 with its original hard case.
9.2 Lbs, which is a very good weight for a Les Paul.
If you got to this listing i’m sure what a Gibson Custom shop Edition “Pre-Historic” Les Paul Standard means, but this particular it’s one of the last ones, during the transitional period where the New Custom Shop officially started as a separate division in October 1993. Gibson Custom Shop instruments exist since the ’80s and were made in the same factory line, however these have a way different and special attention. Usually these instruments stands out from the regular production and have a selected woods and the finest tops. Particularly, this one come with the distinctive from the era “Gibson Custom Shop Edition” decal on the back that only lasted for just a couple of years and still used until 1994 with the later Historic Collection Reissue.
These guitars have the typical appointments from the USA Gibson production line Pre-Historic Reissues with all Mahogany construction, slim 1960 neck profile (neck thicknesss at 1st Fret is .70″ and at 12th fret .890″, nut width is 1.67″) and all the perks you can expect from a Les Paul Standard, however with special attention to wood selection and tops. The pickups are ’57 Classics, Deluxe Kluson Tuners and ABR-1 Bridge. Since this is an earlier Custom Shop at the time there was no CS cases so these guitar came with similar brown Gibson USA of the era. As far as COA, it’s uncertain why some of them came with one and some others don’t, and in this particular there’s none however all the marks are there (June 11th 1992 on the Neck pu cavity and HCSB on the bridge pu cavity). Pots are dated ’92 as well.
As the evolution goes over the years, these Pre-Histotic series are not as vintage specs accurate like the current CS from today (Neither these are still fully accurate to the vintage ones)…Nevertheless the history of being part of the beginning of the Custom Shop makes these guitars so valuable. This is a great era of the Gibson Custom Shop to get excited about, this is the pinnacle of the original good wood era (incredible monster tops and their accurate carve tops) combined with an outstanding craftsmanship and quality control.
Aesthetically, the guitar is in Very Good condition, with some honest play wear and patina and some minor surface level little dings on the edges and top (barely noticeable due to the massive 3D quilted Maple) and some buckle rush however no big details to mention, no cracks. The guitar is in great shape overall, well preserved for +30 year guitar, in 100% perfect working order (truss rod works perfectly) and it’s been played with care. It’s just been set with low action and a fresh set of D’addario strings. It plays incredible well.
