1954 Gibson SJ-200 Sunburst Acoustic guitar

Here is an Original Kalamazoo-built 1954 Gibson SJ-200 Jumbo acoustic guitar, one of the last produced before the model was renamed the J-200 in 1955. This guitar has a solid spruce top paired with solid flamed maple back, sides, and neck, a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and “moustache” bridge, crown mother-of-pearl position markers and headstock logo, and the large engraved and hand-painted floral pickguard Gibson used at the time. 25.5″ scale.

Condition is Very Good+, with wear and patina in the right areas, appropriate for a 70+ year old instrument that has clearly been played and loved. The guitar is completely free of cracks, confirmed under black light inspection. The original nitro lacquer finish remains intact across the entire guitar, showing honest discoloration and playwear consistent with its age. The one exception is a small area on the back where there is buckle rash; that spot alone has been oversprayed at some point, and it’s isolated to that area only. The original pickguard is present and intact, and all body and neck binding is fully preserved.

The neck is straight, the truss rod functions flawlessly, and the neck angle is excellent. Frets are in excellent shape with plenty of life left. The only non-original parts on this guitar are the nut, saddle, and likely the bridge pins; everything else internally and structurally remains original. The instrument just had a full setup with fresh strings installed after photography, action is set low, and it plays exceptionally well right out of the case.

It comes with its original brown Tolex hard case, which is in excellent condition with all latches functioning properly and just a few minor lid dings from decades of use.
