Up for sale is a 2004 Ernie Ball Music Man SUB 4 Bass in Textured Black, made in San Luis Obispo, California, USA (not to be confused with the later Sterling by Music Man SUB series made overseas)/

Originally introduced as a more affordable version of the StingRay, the SUB line was built in the same factory, using the same tonewoods and build quality, with just a few simplified appointments, including a rugged textured painted finish, a satin black-painted neck, and fully passive electronics. It delivered true StingRay feel and tone, but at an affordable price tag. The line didn’t last long, likely because building something this good at this price, in the US, just wasn’t sustainable. It makes sense they later moved production overseas, though the quality of this era remains unmatched for the price.

This particular bass weighs in at 9.0 lbs, which is right around average and feels well-balanced. It features a factory Textured Black finish on the body with a textured aluminum pickguard, paired with a factory black painted maple neck that’s super straight and comfortable. The nut width is 1.69″ (43mm), matching standard StingRay specs. The electronics are 100% original as well as the entire bass.

The condition is Very Good, with honest cosmetic wear. There are a few small noticeable chips and scratches on the headstock, neck, and some surface scratches throughout, but no distress or issues at all. The truss rod works flawlessly, and the bass is currently strung with a fresh set of D’Addario Nickel rounds. It’s been professionally set up and plays great.

It comes with a high-end SKB molded hard shell case with TSA approved locks, which is worth around $200 on its own and it’s in Great condition without any cracks. These basses originally came without any case, so this is a real bonus for protection and transport.
