1972 Fender Competition Mustang Lake Placid Blue

Up for sale, highly collectible 1972 Fender Competition Mustang in Lake Placid Blue with racing stripe, all original, in excellent condition. Made in Fullerton, California, this is one of the later examples from the “Competition” series that ran from 1969 to the early ’70s. It sports the vibrant metallic Lake Placid Blue automotive-style finish with matching racing stripe, pearloid pickguard, and the more contoured body introduced for these models. By the mid-’70s, these flashy finishes were retired, making originals like this highly sought after.

The Competition Mustang was Leo Fender’s last major original design before the CBS era, and its short 24″ scale, comfortable feel, and hot-rod looks made it a hit with players then and now. The Competition Blue variant in particular has earned special notice of late due to its connection to Kurt Cobain, who famously played a rare left-handed version.

This guitar is date-stamped MAR 72 on the neck, pots from the 5th week of ’72, lead pickup ink-stamped “7202” with a May 1 marking under the guard. It even features original white slider switches, an unusual factory quirk, likely leftover parts from earlier ’60s models, with untouched solder joints confirming originality.

Everything on this guitar is original, down to the frets and case, with the only omission being the often-missing bridge cover. The finish has light play wear: a few dings, small chips, some strap/cord burn lines on the back, and a rubbed area along the back edge. The Lake Placid Blue has aged with a hint of green, as these often do, but remains vibrant. The pickguard shows minor shrinkage with the lower front corner missing, and the headstock has light checking but a perfect decal. Frets have light wear in the first position, and the guitar plays great with no repairs or structural issues.

Comes with the original ’60s-style grey hard shell case (slightly sturdier CBS-era build) in excellent shape. If you’re after an original early ’70s Competition Mustang that’s clean, correct, and dripping with vintage Fender cool, this is it.

It ships professionally packed and insured to Continental US and some international destinations.
